Nuclear Ice Age? Sunday, Jun 3 2007

This post is the next part of my previous post ‘Ancient Nuclear War

Many people have asked me a sensible question about ancient nuclear wars. If it were really true that ancient Mahabharata war was a nuclear war, then where is the leftover radiation?

Well, a very good question indeed. I love enquiring deep into things :)

Nuclear bombs leave traces in the form of nuclear radiation which may last from few hundred to few thousand years depending on the half life of the nuclear fuel used and produced in the explosions. The larger the nuclear bomb, the more the leftover radiation!!

Well, but this is definitely not the case with thermonuclear bombs. Thermonuclear bombs are based on hydrogen and hence do not leave any radiational remnants. Tritium used in thermonuclear bombs has a half life of about only 10 years!

Nuclear explosions are used in modern thermonuclear weapons to generate high temperature required to start the fusion chain of hydrogen. But compared to equally destructive nuclear weapons, thermonuclear weapons leave very small amount of nuclear radiation from its fission based core.

Moreover, if the ancients had used some other technology (other than nuclear fission, say for ex: lasers) to initiate fusion reaction in thermonuclear weapons, then any question of left over radiation is almost completely ruled out!!

Now let’s get back to the proof that we have about ancient nuclear war. As stated in ‘Ancient Nuclear War‘ the very first proof is a clear description of the effects of nuclear weapons itself used in the war.

Then we have the huge casualty caused in this ancient world war which lasted only for about 18 days! Both warring sides were almost completely wiped out in this war. No side got a decisive victory. This itself is a striking feature of a nuclear war as we all know. In a nuclear war there are no winners, there are only survivors, if at all.

Next, the large amount of glass is an indication of a nuclear explosion or of any high temperature activity followed by immediate cooling. As found in modern nuclear testing sites like in Nevada desert, etc glass is a natural by-product of high temperature nuclear explosions which melts the clay and sand and cools it immediately afterwards to below its glass transition temperature.

Such glass covered areas have been discovered under the ancient site of Mohen Jo Daro of Indus valley civilization. Then we have the example of libyan desert glass spread over an area of 100 sq km, etc

Now one might argue that this is also possible in case of asteroid impacts! Well, yes, but then asteroid impacts live a crater proportionate to the impact energy, in other words proportionate to the amount of glass available!

In case of libyan desert we can again argue that probably the crater has been closed by the desert sand! But what about Mohen Jo Daro?

The previous ice age ended about 10000 years back. Vedas mention about vega being the pole star. Vega was pole star during the previous ice age. Could it be that, the previous ice age itself was a result of the thermonuclear mahabharata war?

A large scale thermonuclear world war where all countries of that period on earth took part in, causing a global destruction where both the warring sides were wiped out completely (estimated loss of life runs upto 14 billion!), well the Mahabharata war itself as a result of its nuclear weapons might have caused a new ice age to arrive.

The dust clouds resulting out of nuclear explosions prevent sunlight from entering into the earth’s lower layers and hence cool down the earth, and in large scale nuclear strikes these dust clouds stay on for years to come there by causing a nuclear ice age!

Was the previous ice age a nuclear ice age?
Will we witness another nuclear ice age?

Nuclear deal=total sellout Friday, May 18 2007

India and US are talking about a nuclear deal where in US will provide nuclear fuel for Indian reactors to generate power using nuclear energy. In other words, for the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Hyde’s act is the act which allows US govt to sell nuclear fuel to India. What does the US need in return?

  • Separation of Indian civilian and military nuclear establishments
  • Compliance with IAEA to safeguard Indian nuclear reactors. In other words provide access to Indian nuclear reactors to IAEA personnel
  • Process in place to ensure that processed nuclear fuel is not used by India for military purposes like to manufacture a nuclear bomb!
  • Complete ban on all future nuclear weapons tests by India!

Manmohan singh government wants this deal from US so that we can build more nuclear reactors to satisfy India’s growing power needs. Growing economy requires more power for its industries and life style.

Bush administration wants this deal to contain India , gain access in the sub continent and there by use India to contain China.

Before going into the details of this deal, let us see whether India is a true nuclear power today. What does being a nuclear power mean ?

Having the ability to produce nuclear weapons ?
Having tested this capability ?
Having trusted the tests to a satisfactory level ?
Having actualy built bombs based on the tests ?
Having a delivery mechanism in place for the nuclear weapons ?

Its all of the above. But where is India ? Testing 3-4 low yield bombs in a gap of 20 years does not mean we are a nuclear power. We first tested in 1970s then in 1998 after more than 20 years.

Take the case of US for instance. Over a thousand nuclear tests to ensure that the bombs of each and every size that they test works as expected. And today they are planning to phase out their old nuclear weapons and re introduce mini nukes and what not.

Where as India just did some low yield explosions and assumed that the same data could be used to build high yield weapons. Can we be more foolish than introducing untested bombs into our arsenal ? Or are american, chinese, russian, french etc fools to have tested each of their weapons design before including them into their arsenal ?

Many people today wrongly believe that since India has 1998 test data it can do computer simulations for a higher yield using the same data. Any guy in software industry will understand how foolish this approach is.

Consider a database which has been tested with 100 records and we do some select query from that database and see that its working fine. And then we move that database into production servers. In the production the database ends up having a million records and our select query is taking infinite time to run now. Reason ?? applying the standards of 100 records to million records. The true strategy should have been that if the database was supposed to have million records in production, then it MUST HAVE BEEN TESTED AGAINST millions records, not 100 records.

Computer simulations are just playing with numerical data. But then computer simulations will not handle the scenario where a new variable comes into picture say when you increase the yields. We will know about any new variables introduced only when the actual explosion of that higher yield takes place. So imagine a situation tomorrow that we carry out a nuclear strike during a critical war time and it simply doesnt work !!!

Note that pakistan has no such worries because, its technology is a complete chinese copy cat which has been properly tested.

And for the thermo nuclear weapons that India claims to have, not a single weapon of that magnitude has been tested by us. In 1998 we tested a medium yield weapon. We are not to blame the scientists here. It is the lack of political will, which results in tests being carried out once in 25-30 years.

The current US nuclear warheads dateback to the cold war and are about 20 years old and this is considered to be the average lifetime of nuclear warheads and so US plans to replace all these old war heads with new ones. For this purpose US has started a programme called Reliable Replacement Warheads to check the reliability of new warheads being introduced. In other words even after doing over 1000 nuclear tests and thousands of computer simulations US is still not confident about its warhead designs and is conducting a study to make sure that no more tests are required. In fact some time back US scientists found a flaw in W-76 war heads which the Trident D-5 missiles carry !

The same US congress which has approved modernisation of US nuclear weapons has said in Hyde’s act that India should not conduct any more tests ! In March this year, US Deputy Undersecretary of Energy Clay Sell informed Russia that US reserves the right to conduct further nuclear tests ! Isnt it a total sell out for India, by signing this nuclear deal ? In his book India’s Emerging Nuclear Posture: Between Recessed Deterrent and Ready Arsenal Ashley concludes saying ‘Indian nuclear capability is limited to low yield fission bombs’ !

And what do we get from the US nuclear deal?
Nuclear fuel that will be monitored at each level end to end and the spent fuel will be taken back to US so that India doesnt use it as raw material to manufacture more bombs.

Note that India also needs to pay for this fuel. Its not free. We also pay for the technology. Then there is a dependency on US for power generation in India. Once we become completely dependent on US for the fuel for our nuclear reactors, if something goes wrong and US stops supplying the fuel, we will be left nowhere ! Also note that in this deal, US doesnt allow India to buy and store nuclear fuel for future contingency. We get the fuel on an immediate requirement basis only.

Lets look at the root problem. India needs to increase its power generation to satisfy the power needs of its blooming economy. What do we do for that ?

India has the world’s second largest reserves of Thorium. Thorium is a radioactive material and can be used to generate power. What we lack is the technology to do that. Even the west is conducting research on generating power using Thorium. Even in India we are doing research on fast breeder reactors which can generate power using Thorium. We need to concentrate on improving the quality of this research, concentrate more on this, provide more funds, pull in more talents. Once we achieve this goal, we wont need nuclear fuel from any other country. We have lot of Thorium available.

In the mean time, till we succeed in this research, we need to come out with a comprehensive plan to satisfy our power needs. We have a large reserve of coal, so much so that we can even produce oil using our coal. Even China has a large reserve of Coal and they are opening a new coal plant almost every week to meet their energy needs.

Then we need to concentrate on maximising the usage of our existing uranium resources. Plan proper thermo-electric projects. Make use of available wind energy, tidal power and what not. Proper planning and use of technology can help us achieve our goals.

Do not sign the nuclear deal under the current conditions. And if we still do sign, then lets stop calling ourselves a nuclear power. Remember that after spending crores of rupees on missile research, even today our missiles can’t even reach Beijing !

Sometimes I feel that our politicians know all this and thats why we are not harsh in our response to intrusions. Kargil happened and we ended up attacking our own soil but never crossed the LOC. Why ? Pakistan had nuclear missiles on high alert targetting Indian cities. (NOTE: India didnt have any nuclear missiles targetting pakistan then. I am not aware of the current situation)

Chinese incursion into Arunachal Pradesh. A local MP from Arunachal Pradesh recently revealed that Chinese have intruded over 20 KMs inside the Indian territory. Still we dont respond. Why? Chinese have nuclear weapons and a delivery system.

And then there are some pseudo peace lovers in India who say that, we dont need nuclear weapons as we are a peace loving country.

Well, my dear fellow Indians. Strength respects Strength. Krishna says in Mahabharata to Arjuna, ‘You may or may not use your mighty weapons in a war. But it is very very important that you possess them’

I am not proposing to have nukes so that one day we use them. Only a fool like America will use nuclear weapons. We Indians by our very nature love mother nature, worship planet earth and we hate using weapons which affect the environment on a large scale and over long periods of time.

All I am saying is, we need to have nukes so that others think twice before trying out any misadventure on us. And these nukes have to properly tested and trusted weapons mounted on tested and trusted delivery systems.

Be strong and then talk about peace. The whole world will admire and listen. That kind of peace works. There is a difference between US talking about peace and Afghanistan talking about peace.

If you are weak and talk about peace, it looks like a coward waving a white flag in fear of losing the war. Such a peace doesnt work. More kargils and More Arunachals will follow such a peace. Let us not allow 1962 to repeat. Nehru had said, ‘India doesnt need an army, we are a peace loving nation.’ and then came the chinese attack.

Of course we are a peace loving nation. Common man loves peace all over the world. India needs strength to ensure that this peace remains forever.

Divine Weapons Tuesday, May 1 2007

This post is about the weapons used in the great mahabharat war.

Basically there were two types of the weapons used those days. Astras and Shastras (sha as in shall not as in sharp)

Astras were offensive weapons – Brahmastra, Pasupatastra, Agneyastra, Indrastra all come under this category

Shastras were defensive weapons – Shields, brahmadanda etc come under this category

Probably Brahmastra was a nuclear weapon as the description of this weapon in Mahabharata matches exactly that of a nuclear strike. As I have been quoting always, this was first noted by Oppenheimer , the father of modern atomic bomb when americans exploded the test version of the first atomic bomb before using it on Japan. Oppenheimer was surprised when he saw the nuclear explosion as he had already read the Bhagavadgita and Mahabharata and could immediately relate what he saw to what he had read in those ancient texts!!

Astras or the offensive weapons are also called Divyastras ( meaning divine weapons, divya means divine) In other words divyastras are the weapons owned by divine people whom I believe to be the aliens who originally owned these weapons. As I said earlier the gods mentioned in Mahabharata are aliens who visited earth from their far away planets. Maharshis, Brahmarshis etc (they were the scientists, chief scientists of those days and not some normal long bearded saints or sages as many think) usually were the ones who had all secrets of these weapons as they were the original inventors of these and would later hand them over to the political leadership aka the devatas. Some scientists like Shukracharya had defected towards the bad aliens called rakshasas.

If we observe the trend in the mahabharat and other ancient Indian texts, it becomes pretty obvious that these divyastras were limited in number and were hard to obtain. Most great warriors always tried to collect as many divyastras as possible, which is why it was preferred to be taught by great rishis as they possessed the knowledge of these weapons.

For the normal humans on earth, the other way of obtaining these astras was to do tapasya (penance) and have a superluminal contact with the alien gods like Indra who owned these weapons and impress them somehow to get the weapons.

Also it should be noted that these weapons were not necessarily collected in their physical form and stored. Instead the mantras (which I feel were passwords to launch these weapons) of the particular weapon had to be learnt. Without the mantra it was not possible to lauch a weapon. This is the reason why during the crucial stage of the war, Karna inspite of possessing great weapons in his arsenal is not able to use them as he forgets the correspoding mantras of those weapons. This is also the reason how Ekalavya acquires the knowledge of using these weapons even though he is not a student of the great maharshi drona. He learns the mantras by just listening to drona teaching the panadavas and kauravas.

Well, it also looks like mahabharatha war was more of a super psychic, super human warfare. Reciting the mantras would lauch these weapons. There were also mantras to recall the weapons! But not all weapons could be recalled! If the enemy was strong enough then he could also reverese the weapons! Some Shastras like Brahmadanda were known to protect against all kinds of astras including Brahmastra.

By the way there are three great astras which the Top divinity – The Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva possess. This is also where the concept of GOD as Generator, Observer and Destroyer lies. Brahma is the Generator, Vishnu the Observer and Shiva the Destroyer.

Brahma owns Brahmastra
Vishnu owns Narayanastra
Shiva owns Pasupatastra

When I say owns, what it means is that without the consent of the owner, it is not possible to launch these weapons, even if one knew the corresponding mantra of the weapon.

This is the reason Arjuna does tapasya to please lord shiva to obtain the Pasupatastra while preparing for the great Mahabharat war.

One last thought, Mahabharata and the Gita within it could also be combined to be an epic inside every human’s lives, the stage is the human mind itself, the war is going on within us, we need to collect astras to fight the evil thoughts within us, brahmastra and others are the superpsychic combination which could be acquired only by greater concentration and dedication. Krishna says to Arjuna, ‘You may or may not use your weapons in the war. But it is VERY IMPORTANT that you possess them’ !

Below are two images: One of an existing chariot structure.. and the second an artist’s view of how this might actually be a mini space shuttle kind of vehicle with wheels to move on land and also a flying machine!!

Factories of Human Body Parts Saturday, Mar 10 2007

Some date in the not so far future:

A guy is filling out an application form at ‘Humanware Bio Labs’ which reads as follows

Application Form – Human Body Parts

Name : V K Shastry

Age: 19

Stem ID: ASFE135254

Replacement Part: Left Hand

Reason: Lost in an accident

*************

Replaceable human body parts.. Does it sound like a science fiction? Not any more.. Today’s fiction are tomorrow’s facts…

Enter the stem cell technology.. For beginners, here it is.. Stem cells are those cells in our body which have the ability to grow into any part of our body..  Remember, we all started our life as a single cell… which later got multiplied into millions where some went on to become our hands, some into legs, some into heart and so on….

So what if we still have some of those cells which were there in us before our body grew into distinct parts that we have today? Well those are stem cells which are also present in the umblical cord when we were born. of course we even have some of them today in our bone marrows!! But the stem cells in the umblical cords during the time of our birth are more effective and efficient into growing into any of our body part..

So the idea is that as soon as a child is born, store its stem cells from the umblical cord in a stem cell bank, permanently.. God forbidden, sometime in the later if something tragic incident happens and say there is a kidney failure of the child (now probably a grown up adult), well no problems, just take out a stem cell from the reserve that had been stored earlier and invoke the genes that will grow into a full size kidney!! What’s more? Well, the body will never reject this new kidney as it was created from one of its very own stem cell!! No more organ rejections.. No more donor searches… No more risks in organ transplants…

If a person loses a leg in an accident, no problem get a brand new leg attached…

As long as we continue to use our science and technology to create nuclear reactors for power, no problem, we make steady progress ahead..

The problem starts when we think of using the spent nuclear fuel to create an nuclear bomb….. Let us learn the fact that nuclear explosions are meant to take place only on stars to fuel us… Too near is too bad..

Yet Another Pak Missile Test!!! Sunday, Mar 4 2007

The latest news is ‘Pak tests long-range nuke missile, Musharraff congratulates Paki scientists Technical Intelligence

What it really means is… pakistan tests, north korean missile, with technical intelligence by china and funded by saudi arabia, repaintained in green from red and renamed by pakistani scientists’ ;-)

The tests are done periodically to ensure the quality of these missiles as China and North Korea are known to mass produce low quality items and sell for cheaper price..

Oh by the way, so called father of pakistan‘s atomic bomb has a non bailable warrent in Denmark for having stolen nuclear centrifuge blue print, and will be arrested immediately if he goes there ;-) Great going pak, keep it up… everything stolen, begged or borrowed technology
