The Hindu Concept of God Monday, Jun 25 2007
aatma and allah and atma and christianity and church and concept and god and gurudev and hindu and hinduism and hitxp and islam and jesus and muslim and paramatma and quantum mechanics and veda and vedas and vedic and Velankani and Velankanni 7:11 pm
First and foremost, let me clarify that unlike most people think, Hinduism is not a religion in strict sense. It is more of a culture than a religion.
So what is the difference between a culture and a religion?
Religion centers around the God. Where as a culture centers around the way of living. Which is why you find in India for instance Chrisitian or Muslims following the Hindu culture! Even in Bangladesh you can find hindu cultures in muslim life! Chrisitians of Velankani in Tamilnadu follow the hindu culture. Velankanni is a Christian pilgrimage center, here Mother Mary is worshipped by Puja like how hindus do, Chariots are pulled like in hindu temples, there is the concept of prasadam (divine food) in the church like how Hindus give prasadam in the hindu temples.. etc
All other major religions of the world have a propounder, a person who founded the religion. Hinduism has none! Which is why it is called Sanaathana Dharma meaning eternal religion! No debate is blasphemous in Hinduism! Customs can be questioned any time! It does not dictate terms to people saying what woman or men should wear as dress etc. It is always open to debates. There has never been a ‘holy war’ in Hinduism in the name of God! The very existence of God can be debated in Hinduism. Many ancient Indian Hindu texts contain such debates!
Coming back to the concept of God in Hinduism, unlike other religions like Christianity or Islam, it does not talk about a God who stays outside the universe and creates/destroys this universe. Instead here Universe itself is the God! Universe is a self aware Paramaatma (the universal soul) and everything else in the universe is a part of this God! We are all Aatma (souls) whose goal is to realize and unite with this Paramaatma (Universal Soul). Even quantum mechanical physicists like Bohr,Heisenberg, Shcrodinger etc got interested in Vedic texts and Hinduism when they saw that quantum level consciousness of particles was already explained in Hinduism!! For more details read the books like The Dancing Wu Li Masters, The Tao of Physics etc
The Vedas compare creation to a spider’s web, that the spider creates and then lies within. God is both the container of the universe and what is contained in it.
Which is why the sacred vedic texts of Hinduism say ‘Aham Brahmasmi’ which means I am God. This is because I, you and all are a part of this Universal God! Which is also the reason why you find 33 crore Gods in hinduism!! Since Universe itself is the God, everything else and everybody else in the Universe is also a form of God! Which is why Hindus worship water, rain, thunder, earth, moon, sun, stars, sky, humans, trees, plants, animals, air, father, mother, elders, light, wealth, knowledge, anything and everything that you find in this universe as God!
Which is also the reason why a Hindu if by accident happens to touch an animal or a person or a book etc by feet accidentally, then immediately he/she will do a symbolic gesture by hand asking to be forgiven for having shown disrespect to the God in that animal/person/book or whatever by accident…
The hindu prayer that has to be recited every day early morning as soon as one gets up ends saying “…paadasparsham kshamasva me” which means “Oh Mother Earth, Please forgive me for I will be touching you with my feet for the rest of the day!”. Such a nice concept. Can a culture get any more beautiful than this?
Now comes an even more beautiful part of the Hindu Concept of God. The sacred Vedic texts say “Ekam Satya Vipro Bahuda Vadanthi” which means “God is one. Learned scholars call him/her with different names”. This simple yet so wonderful concept makes it unique among all religions! You cannot be a Christian and say I will worship Vishnu or Allah! Christianity doesn’t allow that. You cannot be a Muslim and say I will worship Shiva or Jesus!! Islam doesn’t allow that.
But you can be a Hindu and still say that I will worship Jesus or Allah! Hinduism has no objection. In fact it says you can worship God in any name! Which is why you can find Hindus in India going to Churches, Jain temples, Buddhist temples, Sikh Gurudwaras etc. If all religions were as open minded as Hinduism there would have been no religious fanaticism or religious hatred on this planet and Earth would have been a better place to live in! There would have been no terrorism either!
Which is also the reason why unlike other religions you will find no missionaries or evangelists in Hinduism who promote Hinduism and want to convert entire world into Hinduism! Hinduism does not believe in religious conversions either by force or by bribing or by appeasement. You can be a Hindu and still be a Christian or Mulsim at the same time! You can even be a Christian or Muslim and say that you dont believe in Hinduism, and still Hinduism looks at you as a great soul! It does not say that you will be punished or sent to hell or will become a sinner for not believing in Hindu God! You can even be an atheist! You can say that you don’t want to call the Universal soul as a God! In fact Atheism is like a subclass of Hinduism! Charvaka who lived in 600 BCE was an atheist and pioneered a materialistic movement within Hinduism and even Madhavacharya (he was a 14th century philosopher who wrote a wonderful book Sarva darshana sangraha with a lot of material on atheism, dont confuse him with Madhvacharya of udupi) etc were Atheists and still followed the Hindu Culture!
Infact, the sacred Hindu texts, the Vedas talk more about humans and life than about God! They say, ‘Vasudaiva Kutumbakam’ which means ‘The entire world is a single huge family’! Look at the beauty, they don’t differentiate between people of this religion or that religion, entire Earth is a single family! The vedas also say ‘Sarve Jana Sukhino Bhavantu’ which means ‘May all the people live happily’. Again here all humans are considered equal, there is no differentiation between Hindus and others!!
God if exists, is after all one and the same. You call a Rose by any name, and still it continues to be a Rose. Why should we fight for the name? It doesn’t make any real sense, does it?
By the way, if you are interested, you can also read about the role and status of women in the ancient Indian vedic culture here.
Education in IT era Wednesday, Apr 25 2007
biology and Information Technology and IT and nature and quantum mechanics and Science and universe 6:04 pm
This is the age of information. Internet is the sum of all knowledge gained by humans throughout our recorded history, (of course except for those behind the scenes R&D and classified information and technology in NASA, Pentagon, etc).
In this IT age, what should be taught to children as part of their education.
Do we need to focus on piling up their brains with more and more information ?
OR
Do we need to concentrate on increasing their analytical skills ?
In other words, facts or concepts ?
Unanimously we all vote for concepts. Facts are now available at our finger tips. A simple search on the internet can retrieve a fact. And given that there is so much information available which is difficult for one single brain to grasp it all, we need to focus on creating specializations oriented education system.
But then ask me, I simply dont believe in ‘jack of all, master of none’
I have been studying a variety of subjects from IT to Physics to Mathematics to Music to History to Politics to Economics to Vedas to what not, and what I have observed is that as a person learns more and more wider range of concepts, theories, etc, it becomes more easier to learn even more things due to the inter-relation between these different fields and going in depth into a field also becomes easy than it would have been if one had studied that field alone !
In other words, to become a master of a wide range of subjects, all you need is strong fundamentals in all the related fields AND analytical ability to co-relate things between different fields.
Please note that, all these different fields are artificial classifications by humans, to make it easier to study one thing at a time, for instance nature does not distinguish between physics and biology, the reason for an apple to fall from a tree is explained in physics while the growth of the apple itself is described by botany, these are artificial classifications we did and there are overlappings too like biophysics, biochemistry, physiochemistry etc.
What I intend to mean here is that by restricting one self to a particular field we might get a particular depth in that field, but one will never get a complete picture of that field till he understands other fields also. This is the reason why today scientists have come across a road block in terms of enquiring more into a particular field. Say for ex to understand the true nature of life we need the person to be an expert in biology which defines how a body functions, and then chemistry which describes how the molecules in the body function, and even physics to see for ex how the brain functions at a quantum mechanical level. Now if you are doing a research on the very depth of life, one needs to be expert in all these fields to truly appreciate and understand the real definition of life, bcos as I said earlier, NATURE DOES NOT DISTINGUISH BETWEEN DIFFERENT FIELDS AS PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY, ETC
An expert in string theory, quantum mechanics, relativity, cosmology can have some hope of finding a Grand Unified Theory
A very good doctor, but with very limited knowledge of biotechnology is not a really good idea.
In other words, allow children to have as wide interests as possible to go to a greater depth in the ocean of knowledge. A broader view leads to a more analtyical, non prejudiced thinking, when you think from the views of experts in different fields.
This is the age of information. The more information one has, the more accurate he/she is, the more easier it is to understand, the more easier to relate, the more easier to investigate and dig out more knowledge..
I have seen people who are great experts at a particular software application, but the moment you show them the same computer screen but with some other application window opened, they get completely confused about where to click or which key to press, and they get so relieved when their familiar screen comes up again
Well, thats not how we want to be, dont be afraid of the unknown, for nothing is to be feared, its only to be understood. Take the untravelled paths, uncharted waters, unexplored landscapes, create new paths and be a different person, than to take the same old familiar paths and have no mark of your own…
I think therefore I exist
Quantum level intelligence!! Wednesday, Jan 4 2006
biotechnology and crazy and quantum mechanics and Science 2:09 am
Was just wondering about intelligence. Why only we humans are intelligent? Cant animals be intelligent as well. Just because they can’t think in terms of science and technology does it mean that they are not intelligent? Might be that they are limited by their physical capabilities. Or perhaps that they are no able to communicate to us what they think.
Is there intelligence at a deeper level? Well, yes, we know about our body organs. How well co-ordinated they all are. Heart pumps gallons of blood every day without any body asking it to do so. Our immune system fights against thousands of invaders every day without anybody asking it to do so. Kidneys filter our all the waste from our bodies every day without any body asking it to do so. One might object to this saying that all these organs are designed to do these activities. Well, but by who? If GOD is not the answer then these organs HAVE to be intelligent at their level to do so.
We will go a level deeper.. consider cells. How well co-ordinated the parts of a cell are. Mitochondria breaks down each glucose molecules into 24 ATP molecules to power the ribosomes which manufacture all required enzymes with the help of genetic decoding done by RNA polymerase. Cell doors are opened for useful substances to come in and for toxic wastes and cellular products to move out. Cells divide without anybody asking them to do so. A cell in your hand doesn’t divide finally growing a kidney even though it has enough information stored to grow a kidney on your hand! Remember an ear grown on a poor rat’s back as a result of an experiment by some bio-enthusiast? One might object to this saying that cells are designed to do all these activities. Well, but by who? If GOD is not the answer then cells HAVE to be intelligent at their level to do so.
Going even more deeper, we have the genetic code itself.
Entire life written using 4 simple alphabets A,T,G and C. How did this massive information organize itself? Evolving and learning throughout the process? Deciding on the need for different organs, enzymes, their roles, body structure, the physics and chemistry involved, reproduction, etc????? Genes have to be intelligent to do so!!!
At an acellular level… how did all different constituents of a cell decide to go and grow together for mutual benefit as a cell… mitochondria talked to ribosomes and golgi apparatues and endoplasmic reticulum and …. and they all decided to live together as a cell in the early stages of evolutions?????
Going a level further down.. molecules and atoms.. how did they decide about which is the best angle for them to bond together? without being intelligent?? even if the best bonds were selected as a result of few thousand random tries, who initiated these few thousand random tries?????
Get to the quantum level.. how does a meson know that its lifetime is over and it has to disintegrate?? how is the quantum entaglement and non-locality possible without intelligent quantum particles? Dont you feel things are much more complicated than we know? Dont you feel that we have taken all these things for granted without digging much deeper? Ask a baby who is still learning to walk properly and it will tell you how concentrated it needs to be while walking and how it has to evaluate its every step and ask me, I take walking for granted!!! We take intelligence for granted, without knowing that we have acquired it from our quantum past!!!
