World War III – Potential Flash Points Monday, Jul 23 2007

One of my favorite quotes about wars is

“A war does not decide who is right, it only decides who is left” :)

No sane person wants to see another world war, but at the same time it is ludicrous to say that there won’t be any wars in the future, unless and until the whole world starts following Buddhism!

The Scenario

The news we see everyday, the news we read everyday, the news we hear everyday is filled with how one country is pitted against the other, how one group wants to finish the other, ethnic violence, religious violence, racism, ideological violence, political violence and what not…

And enter Al Qaeda and Pakistan’s home grown breed of terrorists, kahani mein twist, a twist in the story…. Now its not just the political leadership of countries that can start a war, even terrorist groups can initiate one! The threat is not about sophisticated nuclear arsenals and delivery systems of US or Russia, but its more about dirty nukes in the hands of terrorists!

US and allies have waged a war on terror, Pakistan’s Musharraff is playing the game of running with the hare and hunting with the hounds, China is uneasy over Taiwan, Israel is watching Iran, Russia is irritated over UK, AlQaeda wants to wipe out the civilized world..

What are the possible flashpoints to trigger a third world war? Well, I am not a pessimist, but the triggers do very much exist in the world today. So as a member of a responsible(?) species with a duty towards its own species and more towards the planet, we have to identify all these triggers and not just TRY to put them off, but have to LITERALLY PUT THEM OFF..

The List

So here is the list, in the reverse order from the lowest to the highest probability of occurrence..

5. Musharraff overthrown by fundamental elements in Pakistan, a preemptive strike on Pakistani military facilities by India, An entry by China to assist Pakistan, US enters to support India, North Korea enters to support China, Japan enters to support India…..

4. US missile defense installations in Czech and Poland cause Russia to deploy ICBM missiles in its European borders, a misunderstood testing by the US systems in Poland or Czech is all that it takes to trigger a global escalation..

3. Taiwan declares Independence, China forcefully tries to annexe Taiwan, US strikes China, Russia enters the war, Japan enters the war, North Korea, South Korea….

2. Realizing the fear of acquisition of a nuclear weapon by Iran, Israel strikes Iranian nuclear facilities, Iran retaliates and the US enters into the equation…

1. A dirty nuke exploded by a terrorist group in any of the major western cities! Say US, and US reacts, and reacts strongly, on the root, the root as usual leads to Pakistan, enter China, India forced into the war, and then Russia, parallel ignition by Iran on the Israel….

The Solution

First of all, for heavens sake all countries should get rid of all their nuclear weapons. If not humans, at least other species should be allowed to survive on this planet after a world war.. All nuclear weapons should be disposed immediately and the process should be started in the order mentioned – USA, Russia, France, China, UK, India, Pakistan, Israel..

This ensures that even if there is a war, innocent people wont die, at least not in the number of millions. Let the wars not target any civilian locations. Nuclear fuel is meant to generate electrical power inside the nuclear reactors and let us stick to that use…

Fundamentalism should be wiped out of this planet, rather than trying to wipe out the terrorists.. All young kids all over the planet should be given proper civilized education and should be protected from being brainwashed by the fundamentalists..

It is a known fact that USA used fundamentalist terrorist elements against USSR during the cold war.. Pakistan is using them against India… This should not be allowed to continue any more…

Any regime supporting terrorist or fundamentalist elements should be thrown out and democratic institutions should be installed all over the globe. Every country’s fate should be decided by its own people and not by dictatorial regimes..

Having said all this, does it sound practical enough? Will US and other countries give up their nuclear arsenal? Can we prevent terrorist organizations from misguiding and recruiting youth?

Hope is a very beautiful and promising word, isn’t it? :)

Let us hope that the hope for a better future ultimately prevails..

Let us hope that the future generations on this planet will refer to the above mentioned list of flash points as, possible world war or nuclear flash points that once existed in this world, like the way how we today refer to the Cuban missile crisis as a possible nuclear flash point that once existed during the days of the cold war…

Global Warming – Boon or Bane? Wednesday, Jun 13 2007

As we all know, most of the continental land lies in the northern hemisphere of our planet.

Northern hemisphere of earth has been undergoing periodic glacial ice ages. In every 100,000 years 90,000 years have been a glacial ice age followed by a intermediate shorter 10,000 years of moderate temperature.

The reasons for these repeated ice ages are not known. One reason might be the wobbling of earth’s axis. Or may be that Sun passes through some galactic dust cloud periodically there by blocking sunlight to earth which triggers an ice age! Ice age can also occur if some comet/asteroid explodes near sun, where its debris blocks sunlight to earth! Super Volcano, Nuclear wars etc might also cause shorter ice ages.

We have been without an ice age for more than 13000 years!! So we are already overdue for a new ice age in this cycle!! It may have started any time. Or has it already?

Ice age starts when the average atmospheric temperature goes down. The greenhouse gases in the atmosphere of earth, like CO2 ensure that night side earth does not cool down suddenly to temperatures below zero! These gases maintain a minimum warmth on the earth there by making life possible.

Due to the man made pollution on earth the green house gases have been steadily increasing in this planet’s atmosphere. Environmentalists are absolutely right in saying that these green house gases have been causing an increase in earth’s temperature, which is definitely a cause of concern.

But then, is it possible that it is these very green house gases that have saved us from an ice age this time? The CO2 dumped into air by man made pollution has prevented the ice age this time? Is Global warming a boon which is preventing a global cooling?

Sometime back, I had read an interesting article somewhere on the internet related to this. CO2 in air is good to the growth of plant life. Ever since we have started polluting this planet by more and more CO2, algae growth has increased heavily in the oceans of the earth. As we all know, it is these algae which had once upon a time cleaned much of earth’s CO2 when life started evolving. Now that there is abundant CO2 in atmosphere, algae are thriving again to consume this CO2.

Imagine a scenario where in, in the next 50 years we come up with cleaner fuels, say from nuclear fuels or solar energy. Then we stop using petroleum related fuels in order to reduce pollution. Since we will be using environmental friendly cleaner fuels, the CO2 emission by industries and automobiles will go down to almost zero. Only CO2 emission in the atmosphere will be what life on earth breathes out.The existing chunk of CO2 by earlier man made pollution will be cleaned out over a period of time by the ocean’s algae.

But what after that? The excess algae created by pollution are still there in vast amounts in the oceans and now there is no CO2 by pollution for them to consume!!! They start consuming even the normal CO2 level in atmosphere which maintains a normal temperature on earth. In other words even the required green house gases will be gone!!! This would simply mean that we would have been accelerating towards a new ice age, just in a matter of one or two decades once we start using clean fuel!! In this case, even the ‘ice age’ would be man made!! Then this ice age would also be supported by the natural ice age which was suppressed by global warming earlier!! Will this new ice age ever end then???

So what am I trying to say here? Well, once we come up with cleaner fuels, we need to take global cleaning of man made pollution as a gigantic project and analyze all the angles and repercussions of global cooling. In this case, we need to ensure that the excess algae created in the oceans by global warming are wiped out first. We need to have a controlled reducing of CO2 level in atmosphere so that the natural CO2 level is always maintained,  which would prevent a permanent ice age on earth.

Cleaning out pollution on earth would be a huge task indeed and I think those nations which contributed most to the earth’s pollution should share an equivalent cost in cleaning earth too. Obviously USA will have to share atleast 50% of this cost. But looking at the impending collapse of US dollar, given that every American citizen already has a debt of over 28000$ on his/her head, I dont think US can pay for that :-)

Nuclear Ice Age? Sunday, Jun 3 2007

This post is the next part of my previous post ‘Ancient Nuclear War

Many people have asked me a sensible question about ancient nuclear wars. If it were really true that ancient Mahabharata war was a nuclear war, then where is the leftover radiation?

Well, a very good question indeed. I love enquiring deep into things :)

Nuclear bombs leave traces in the form of nuclear radiation which may last from few hundred to few thousand years depending on the half life of the nuclear fuel used and produced in the explosions. The larger the nuclear bomb, the more the leftover radiation!!

Well, but this is definitely not the case with thermonuclear bombs. Thermonuclear bombs are based on hydrogen and hence do not leave any radiational remnants. Tritium used in thermonuclear bombs has a half life of about only 10 years!

Nuclear explosions are used in modern thermonuclear weapons to generate high temperature required to start the fusion chain of hydrogen. But compared to equally destructive nuclear weapons, thermonuclear weapons leave very small amount of nuclear radiation from its fission based core.

Moreover, if the ancients had used some other technology (other than nuclear fission, say for ex: lasers) to initiate fusion reaction in thermonuclear weapons, then any question of left over radiation is almost completely ruled out!!

Now let’s get back to the proof that we have about ancient nuclear war. As stated in ‘Ancient Nuclear War‘ the very first proof is a clear description of the effects of nuclear weapons itself used in the war.

Then we have the huge casualty caused in this ancient world war which lasted only for about 18 days! Both warring sides were almost completely wiped out in this war. No side got a decisive victory. This itself is a striking feature of a nuclear war as we all know. In a nuclear war there are no winners, there are only survivors, if at all.

Next, the large amount of glass is an indication of a nuclear explosion or of any high temperature activity followed by immediate cooling. As found in modern nuclear testing sites like in Nevada desert, etc glass is a natural by-product of high temperature nuclear explosions which melts the clay and sand and cools it immediately afterwards to below its glass transition temperature.

Such glass covered areas have been discovered under the ancient site of Mohen Jo Daro of Indus valley civilization. Then we have the example of libyan desert glass spread over an area of 100 sq km, etc

Now one might argue that this is also possible in case of asteroid impacts! Well, yes, but then asteroid impacts live a crater proportionate to the impact energy, in other words proportionate to the amount of glass available!

In case of libyan desert we can again argue that probably the crater has been closed by the desert sand! But what about Mohen Jo Daro?

The previous ice age ended about 10000 years back. Vedas mention about vega being the pole star. Vega was pole star during the previous ice age. Could it be that, the previous ice age itself was a result of the thermonuclear mahabharata war?

A large scale thermonuclear world war where all countries of that period on earth took part in, causing a global destruction where both the warring sides were wiped out completely (estimated loss of life runs upto 14 billion!), well the Mahabharata war itself as a result of its nuclear weapons might have caused a new ice age to arrive.

The dust clouds resulting out of nuclear explosions prevent sunlight from entering into the earth’s lower layers and hence cool down the earth, and in large scale nuclear strikes these dust clouds stay on for years to come there by causing a nuclear ice age!

Was the previous ice age a nuclear ice age?
Will we witness another nuclear ice age?

Nuclear deal=total sellout Friday, May 18 2007

India and US are talking about a nuclear deal where in US will provide nuclear fuel for Indian reactors to generate power using nuclear energy. In other words, for the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Hyde’s act is the act which allows US govt to sell nuclear fuel to India. What does the US need in return?

  • Separation of Indian civilian and military nuclear establishments
  • Compliance with IAEA to safeguard Indian nuclear reactors. In other words provide access to Indian nuclear reactors to IAEA personnel
  • Process in place to ensure that processed nuclear fuel is not used by India for military purposes like to manufacture a nuclear bomb!
  • Complete ban on all future nuclear weapons tests by India!

Manmohan singh government wants this deal from US so that we can build more nuclear reactors to satisfy India’s growing power needs. Growing economy requires more power for its industries and life style.

Bush administration wants this deal to contain India , gain access in the sub continent and there by use India to contain China.

Before going into the details of this deal, let us see whether India is a true nuclear power today. What does being a nuclear power mean ?

Having the ability to produce nuclear weapons ?
Having tested this capability ?
Having trusted the tests to a satisfactory level ?
Having actualy built bombs based on the tests ?
Having a delivery mechanism in place for the nuclear weapons ?

Its all of the above. But where is India ? Testing 3-4 low yield bombs in a gap of 20 years does not mean we are a nuclear power. We first tested in 1970s then in 1998 after more than 20 years.

Take the case of US for instance. Over a thousand nuclear tests to ensure that the bombs of each and every size that they test works as expected. And today they are planning to phase out their old nuclear weapons and re introduce mini nukes and what not.

Where as India just did some low yield explosions and assumed that the same data could be used to build high yield weapons. Can we be more foolish than introducing untested bombs into our arsenal ? Or are american, chinese, russian, french etc fools to have tested each of their weapons design before including them into their arsenal ?

Many people today wrongly believe that since India has 1998 test data it can do computer simulations for a higher yield using the same data. Any guy in software industry will understand how foolish this approach is.

Consider a database which has been tested with 100 records and we do some select query from that database and see that its working fine. And then we move that database into production servers. In the production the database ends up having a million records and our select query is taking infinite time to run now. Reason ?? applying the standards of 100 records to million records. The true strategy should have been that if the database was supposed to have million records in production, then it MUST HAVE BEEN TESTED AGAINST millions records, not 100 records.

Computer simulations are just playing with numerical data. But then computer simulations will not handle the scenario where a new variable comes into picture say when you increase the yields. We will know about any new variables introduced only when the actual explosion of that higher yield takes place. So imagine a situation tomorrow that we carry out a nuclear strike during a critical war time and it simply doesnt work !!!

Note that pakistan has no such worries because, its technology is a complete chinese copy cat which has been properly tested.

And for the thermo nuclear weapons that India claims to have, not a single weapon of that magnitude has been tested by us. In 1998 we tested a medium yield weapon. We are not to blame the scientists here. It is the lack of political will, which results in tests being carried out once in 25-30 years.

The current US nuclear warheads dateback to the cold war and are about 20 years old and this is considered to be the average lifetime of nuclear warheads and so US plans to replace all these old war heads with new ones. For this purpose US has started a programme called Reliable Replacement Warheads to check the reliability of new warheads being introduced. In other words even after doing over 1000 nuclear tests and thousands of computer simulations US is still not confident about its warhead designs and is conducting a study to make sure that no more tests are required. In fact some time back US scientists found a flaw in W-76 war heads which the Trident D-5 missiles carry !

The same US congress which has approved modernisation of US nuclear weapons has said in Hyde’s act that India should not conduct any more tests ! In March this year, US Deputy Undersecretary of Energy Clay Sell informed Russia that US reserves the right to conduct further nuclear tests ! Isnt it a total sell out for India, by signing this nuclear deal ? In his book India’s Emerging Nuclear Posture: Between Recessed Deterrent and Ready Arsenal Ashley concludes saying ‘Indian nuclear capability is limited to low yield fission bombs’ !

And what do we get from the US nuclear deal?
Nuclear fuel that will be monitored at each level end to end and the spent fuel will be taken back to US so that India doesnt use it as raw material to manufacture more bombs.

Note that India also needs to pay for this fuel. Its not free. We also pay for the technology. Then there is a dependency on US for power generation in India. Once we become completely dependent on US for the fuel for our nuclear reactors, if something goes wrong and US stops supplying the fuel, we will be left nowhere ! Also note that in this deal, US doesnt allow India to buy and store nuclear fuel for future contingency. We get the fuel on an immediate requirement basis only.

Lets look at the root problem. India needs to increase its power generation to satisfy the power needs of its blooming economy. What do we do for that ?

India has the world’s second largest reserves of Thorium. Thorium is a radioactive material and can be used to generate power. What we lack is the technology to do that. Even the west is conducting research on generating power using Thorium. Even in India we are doing research on fast breeder reactors which can generate power using Thorium. We need to concentrate on improving the quality of this research, concentrate more on this, provide more funds, pull in more talents. Once we achieve this goal, we wont need nuclear fuel from any other country. We have lot of Thorium available.

In the mean time, till we succeed in this research, we need to come out with a comprehensive plan to satisfy our power needs. We have a large reserve of coal, so much so that we can even produce oil using our coal. Even China has a large reserve of Coal and they are opening a new coal plant almost every week to meet their energy needs.

Then we need to concentrate on maximising the usage of our existing uranium resources. Plan proper thermo-electric projects. Make use of available wind energy, tidal power and what not. Proper planning and use of technology can help us achieve our goals.

Do not sign the nuclear deal under the current conditions. And if we still do sign, then lets stop calling ourselves a nuclear power. Remember that after spending crores of rupees on missile research, even today our missiles can’t even reach Beijing !

Sometimes I feel that our politicians know all this and thats why we are not harsh in our response to intrusions. Kargil happened and we ended up attacking our own soil but never crossed the LOC. Why ? Pakistan had nuclear missiles on high alert targetting Indian cities. (NOTE: India didnt have any nuclear missiles targetting pakistan then. I am not aware of the current situation)

Chinese incursion into Arunachal Pradesh. A local MP from Arunachal Pradesh recently revealed that Chinese have intruded over 20 KMs inside the Indian territory. Still we dont respond. Why? Chinese have nuclear weapons and a delivery system.

And then there are some pseudo peace lovers in India who say that, we dont need nuclear weapons as we are a peace loving country.

Well, my dear fellow Indians. Strength respects Strength. Krishna says in Mahabharata to Arjuna, ‘You may or may not use your mighty weapons in a war. But it is very very important that you possess them’

I am not proposing to have nukes so that one day we use them. Only a fool like America will use nuclear weapons. We Indians by our very nature love mother nature, worship planet earth and we hate using weapons which affect the environment on a large scale and over long periods of time.

All I am saying is, we need to have nukes so that others think twice before trying out any misadventure on us. And these nukes have to properly tested and trusted weapons mounted on tested and trusted delivery systems.

Be strong and then talk about peace. The whole world will admire and listen. That kind of peace works. There is a difference between US talking about peace and Afghanistan talking about peace.

If you are weak and talk about peace, it looks like a coward waving a white flag in fear of losing the war. Such a peace doesnt work. More kargils and More Arunachals will follow such a peace. Let us not allow 1962 to repeat. Nehru had said, ‘India doesnt need an army, we are a peace loving nation.’ and then came the chinese attack.

Of course we are a peace loving nation. Common man loves peace all over the world. India needs strength to ensure that this peace remains forever.

Divine Weapons Tuesday, May 1 2007

This post is about the weapons used in the great mahabharat war.

Basically there were two types of the weapons used those days. Astras and Shastras (sha as in shall not as in sharp)

Astras were offensive weapons – Brahmastra, Pasupatastra, Agneyastra, Indrastra all come under this category

Shastras were defensive weapons – Shields, brahmadanda etc come under this category

Probably Brahmastra was a nuclear weapon as the description of this weapon in Mahabharata matches exactly that of a nuclear strike. As I have been quoting always, this was first noted by Oppenheimer , the father of modern atomic bomb when americans exploded the test version of the first atomic bomb before using it on Japan. Oppenheimer was surprised when he saw the nuclear explosion as he had already read the Bhagavadgita and Mahabharata and could immediately relate what he saw to what he had read in those ancient texts!!

Astras or the offensive weapons are also called Divyastras ( meaning divine weapons, divya means divine) In other words divyastras are the weapons owned by divine people whom I believe to be the aliens who originally owned these weapons. As I said earlier the gods mentioned in Mahabharata are aliens who visited earth from their far away planets. Maharshis, Brahmarshis etc (they were the scientists, chief scientists of those days and not some normal long bearded saints or sages as many think) usually were the ones who had all secrets of these weapons as they were the original inventors of these and would later hand them over to the political leadership aka the devatas. Some scientists like Shukracharya had defected towards the bad aliens called rakshasas.

If we observe the trend in the mahabharat and other ancient Indian texts, it becomes pretty obvious that these divyastras were limited in number and were hard to obtain. Most great warriors always tried to collect as many divyastras as possible, which is why it was preferred to be taught by great rishis as they possessed the knowledge of these weapons.

For the normal humans on earth, the other way of obtaining these astras was to do tapasya (penance) and have a superluminal contact with the alien gods like Indra who owned these weapons and impress them somehow to get the weapons.

Also it should be noted that these weapons were not necessarily collected in their physical form and stored. Instead the mantras (which I feel were passwords to launch these weapons) of the particular weapon had to be learnt. Without the mantra it was not possible to lauch a weapon. This is the reason why during the crucial stage of the war, Karna inspite of possessing great weapons in his arsenal is not able to use them as he forgets the correspoding mantras of those weapons. This is also the reason how Ekalavya acquires the knowledge of using these weapons even though he is not a student of the great maharshi drona. He learns the mantras by just listening to drona teaching the panadavas and kauravas.

Well, it also looks like mahabharatha war was more of a super psychic, super human warfare. Reciting the mantras would lauch these weapons. There were also mantras to recall the weapons! But not all weapons could be recalled! If the enemy was strong enough then he could also reverese the weapons! Some Shastras like Brahmadanda were known to protect against all kinds of astras including Brahmastra.

By the way there are three great astras which the Top divinity – The Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva possess. This is also where the concept of GOD as Generator, Observer and Destroyer lies. Brahma is the Generator, Vishnu the Observer and Shiva the Destroyer.

Brahma owns Brahmastra
Vishnu owns Narayanastra
Shiva owns Pasupatastra

When I say owns, what it means is that without the consent of the owner, it is not possible to launch these weapons, even if one knew the corresponding mantra of the weapon.

This is the reason Arjuna does tapasya to please lord shiva to obtain the Pasupatastra while preparing for the great Mahabharat war.

One last thought, Mahabharata and the Gita within it could also be combined to be an epic inside every human’s lives, the stage is the human mind itself, the war is going on within us, we need to collect astras to fight the evil thoughts within us, brahmastra and others are the superpsychic combination which could be acquired only by greater concentration and dedication. Krishna says to Arjuna, ‘You may or may not use your weapons in the war. But it is VERY IMPORTANT that you possess them’ !

Below are two images: One of an existing chariot structure.. and the second an artist’s view of how this might actually be a mini space shuttle kind of vehicle with wheels to move on land and also a flying machine!!

Scientific Verification of Vedic Knowledge in Hinduism Monday, Apr 30 2007

The british who ruled India wanted Indians to feel that everything west, english and european to be superior, and anything that had to do with Indian culture and history as inferior, unscientific and stupid.

Macauley introduced the english education system in India which enforced these thoughts about western superiority and Indian inferiority in the minds of the Indian children.

Max muller propagated the myth of Aryan invasion theory in an aim to divide north and south India on the lines of Aryan – Dravidian basis saying Aryans invaded India from europe at around 1500 BC and pushed down the local draividians down south. Modern archaeology says nothing is more stupid, racist and biased than this nonsensical theory whose sole aim was a politically motivated intention. Max muller also wrote off vedas as ‘waste stuff’ only to be commented later by world’s reknown indologists as ‘this only shows the nursery school knowledge muller had about sanskrit’

The archelogical excavations of Harappa, Mohen Jo Daro, the discovery of the city of Dwaraka in the seas of Gujarat, the satellite imagery and geological evidences about tectonic plate shifting of the sub continent supporting the existence of Saraswati river mentioned in the vedas, the Kausambi and Hastinapur flooding excavations, all have proved beyond doubt that there has been no invasion from outside in 1500 BC by aryans.

Instead aryans were an indegenious race inherent to India for the very simple fact that all above mentioned evidences date back existence of aryans in India to even before 3500 BC AND not a single evidence of aryan existence or literature has been found outside the Indian subcontinent AND all locations, rivers, cities, kingdoms etc mentioned in the vedic scriptures have been mapped inside India – the India mentioned in vedas include current India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Burma.

So what’s more about the vedas?

Vedas are the greatest scientific text ever written.

Vedic mathematics is the best form of mathematics taught all over the world today to speed up calculations.
Einstein said, if not for Indians who invented ZERO and place value system, the science and technological achievements of the world would have been ZERO!
Infact, the other day when a friend commented on my wearing a tommy hilfiger jacket, saying the jacket’s creator had said that ‘It was meant only for the whites’, my reply was ‘Well, then what if I say that the Zero invented by ancient Indians was meant only to be used by Indians?’ ;-) Forget other implications of this, I dont think anybody in the west today can even use computers, which are binary in nature – based on Zero and One.

Sanskrit is the only language spoken by humans which can be easily used as a computer programming language.

Ayurveda is the world’s oldest medicinal system and has absolutely no side effects on the body, unlike western medicines AND unlike the western medicines like sedatives, pain killers and what not, Ayurveda doesn’t hide the pain or symptoms, it doesnt treat the outcome of an illness, but instead hits right at the source of the illness. It prepares your body to be strong enough to counter health issues than to make it dependendant for the rest of its life on external medicines.

Yoga are the exercises which unlike the western gyms, are not aimed at making only your biceps and other external organs strong, but instead concentrate on building a body inside out along with maintaining a mental fitness too. Sweating out is not physical fitness buddies, people in rural India sweat n number of times more than those who work out in the gyms, for gyms you need to have extra time for that, whereas in rural India sweating is a result of people’s normal day today activities !!

Bhagavadgeetha is the greatest ever work on human psychology. World’s greatest scientists, philosophers, writers, politicians, have been daily readers of this great work to keep them mentally fit and to face the world’s challenges.

Oppenheimer, father of modern atomic bomb suspected that Mahabharatha war was a nuclear war based on the accurate descriptions of nuclear weapons and its effects found in Bhagavadgeeta. I think that the other reason Mahabharatha war has to be considered a nuclear war is that, it is said in Mahabharatha that in a time span of less than a month 14 billion people were killed!! For those who are not aware how big a number this is, the current world population is just above 6 billion! I cant think of anything other than nuclear weapons that could kill so many people in so little time.

Below is a list of must-watch documentaries on the ‘Scientific Verification of Vedic Knowledge in Hinduism’

For a developed world Wednesday, Apr 25 2007

In one of my earlier blogs, I had mentioned that India alone needs one and a half times the energy currently consumed by entire world, if India were to be a nation as developed as USA.

The living standards of a developed nation like USA is completely dependent on the availability of energy for all the necessities and luxuries that a developed society offers.

Now how on earth can we get such a huge amount of energy ? Already we are running out of resources like petroleum, nuclear options are dangerous and also very soon we will run out of nuclear fuels, nuclear materials are controlled by a few countries of the world, if we dont create fast breeder reactors using thorium then we have little nuclear fuel left, what about pollution? nuclear wastes?

For the whole world to live like a developed nation the amount of energy required is about 8 times the energy that the world produces currently. But how?

Only feasible non polluting long term solution seems to be our true energy provider, SUN

To harness energy from Sun, we need to install solar panels, but how on earth?

Problem #1 is Land for solar panels: Dedicated land for solar panels is not feasible. There might be cloudy days. Land will be wasted and not available for other purpose.

Problem #2 is Storage: Suppose we distribute solar panels across the globe. On top of all buildings, vehicles and what not. We cant touch the forests though. Now how do we collect the power generated from all these places and store ? It will become a infrastructure problem. Again not really feasible. Say suppose we want to store power enough for the entire world for next 6 months.

Problem #3 Weather: All days are not sunny days. There are cloudy days, there are rainy days, and there are days which are not either and still not sunny.

Problem #4, Night: Only half of earth will be working at a time. Part of earth on the night side cannot harness solar energy.

More than anything else, when the entire world becomes a developed society, power requirements will be so dynamic and high that most of the stored power will be consumed almost immediately, and we cannot afford more storage space too as world population increases. Also we dont want to risk lives by having massive power storage grids.

Then the solution ? I always love to look at outer space ;-) There lies the solution

Millions of solar panels and power storage units floating in outer space. . Solar energy is captured from the sun to generate power and the power is transmitted to local storage units spread all over the earth on demand in the form of direct contact lightning strikes to ground based storage units for immediate consumption. Of course normal clouds on earth which cause lightening are at a quite lower altitude on earth compared to sending electricity from space, so we need to have intermediary receivers at different levels. Probably we may have a local backup of few days for the entire planet in case the space infrastructure fails.

Fault tolerance is required for these space based solar panels. There will be constant wear and tear. Meteorites might break down the panels and grids. Asteroids might hit. Comets might interfere. So we need to have propulsion based computer guided systems in all these free floating power generators in space which move around in a flexible manner in response to projectile threats in the space.

There should be on site robots which constantly repair all those worn and torn panels and grids. All the storage will be in space and energy as required is pumped down to earth. No wastage of space as long as we rely on outer space. In fact in the future we can move out all the manufacturing industries and factories to outer space. Use locally available resources as much as possible in outer space like solar energy, hydrogen, mineral ores from asteroids, etc and have the entire setup run by robots.

Well we might have the contemporary science fiction movies then which would have a plot where aliens try to steal power from our grids ! or say they install their own robots in our space based power generation units to take over the entire system !

Also since power is available in space, our future interplanetary, interstellar or intergalactic missions which take off from earth need not carry the complete power payload from earth itself, instead they can carry the bear minimum energy required for a take off to get out of earth’s gravity and then recharge themselves later with enough power at these space based power grids OR we can have all take offs for space travel from the space stations built somewhere near these power grids!

We can even have these solar panels and power grids at all the planets in our solar system and on prominent asteroids for consumptions by human/robotic missions which arrive to these places.

These were my thoughts that started with a requirement for a reliable energy resource for a developed world and later increased to scope to include space based factories, industries, space travel…….

Always use the word ‘impossible’ with great caution ;-)
