Whats up Karnataka? Sunday, Oct 7 2007

Twenty months ago Mr.Kumaraswamy of JD(S) formed an alliance with BJP and became the chief minister of Karnataka. His father and party chief of JD(S) Mr.Devegowda cried foul then of being betrayed by his son who joined hands with BJP against his wishes.

Mr.Kumaraswamy had then entered into an agreement with BJP that twenty months later he would offer the chief minister’s post to Mr Yediyurappa of BJP, for the remaining period of twenty months. In other words, for the remaining 40 months of the state assembly, JD(S) and BJP had come to a 20-20 agreement!

Twnenty months later today when the time has come for Mr.Kumaraswamy to transfer power to the BJP he decided against it! Today he accuses BJP of being communal, that this and what not, after having royally enjoyed power with its support for 20 months.

Today BJP feels betrayed. BJP even though it had 79 MLAs against only 57 of JD(S), still had agreed to give the first chief ministership to JD(S). But when it was JD(S) turn last week, Mr.Kumaraswamy refused any power transfer.

His father, the party chief Mr.Devegowda who was all these days away from the government, now suddenly has swung into action saying that his party cannot transfer power to BJP. The reason given by Mr.Devegowda is that he wants his party to stick to its secular principles, and hence doesnt want to support a party which he calls to be communal.

Well Mr Devegowda, where were the secular credentials of JD(S) when it enjoyed power with the support of BJP for all these 20 months? Party ideology didn’t matter to JD(S) when it came to gaining power. But today it matters because JD(S) has to give up power!

Mr.Kumarswamy and his father Mr.Devegowda today have only proved Congress and Mr Siddharamaiah right. Mr Siddharamaiah and Congress had said 20 months back that this entire game is a political melodrama being played by the father and son. Son tells father that he will pretend as if he hit him, and the father pretends as if he got hurt and is crying, or the other way round.

See to what extent these politicians go for the sake of votebank politics? Mr.Devegowda had once said that he would love to be born as a muslim in his next birth! What does he mean? That he is not happy for being born in this birth as a Gowda/Hindu?! Mr.Devegowda should be happy and thankful that he is born as a human being who can think!

Who is stopping him from becoming a muslim in this birth itself!! What has he done to the muslims of the state when he/his party was in power for more than 16 years? These people only use minorities as votebank.

Mr.Devegowda had also said earlier that Vokkaligas and Lingayats eat Beef!! What nonsense is this?? Why tarnish an entire community with statements like this? What purpose do these statements serve?

Today Mr Kumaraswamy cries like a helpless child saying that his father has to be convinced to transfer power to the BJP!!! Well Mr.Kumaraswamy, did you convince your father when you became the chief minister?? If you could go against the wishes of your father when becoming the chief minister, why cant you do the same to keep your promise and do the power transfer to BJP now?

The same Kumaraswamy had earlier promised in front of his holiness Sri Balagangadharnath Swamy of Siddhaganga Peeta in May this year, that he will transfer the power to BJP on October 3 2007, and today since he has broken that promise, Sri Balagangadharnath Swamy has been hurt and has refused to inaugurate the government sponsored Mysore Dasara celebrations.

The same Kumaraswamy who had promised 20 months earlier about the deal with 5 crore kannadigas as witness today has broke his promise and has proved to be just another shameless politician who proudly claims to have broken the promise in the interests of his party.

Devegowda today claims that any good performance of this government is because of his party. Well, Mr Devegowda why did all these performance and good governance did not take place in the state when JD(S) was in power on its own in the past 16 years? Why was liquor not banned when JD(S) alone was in power? Why people had to wait till BJP became a partner in the coalition government?

If today the treasury of Karnataka government is filled with thousands of crores of cash, it is purely because of the wonderful performance and the great budget given to the state by Mr. Yediyurappa of BJP who was the finance minister of the state in the government. The numbers speak for itself.

Today Mr.Kumaraswamy accuses BJP of infight, but that is none of his business. That is an internal matter of BJP. All he had to do is to do the power transfer, and then the ball would have been in BJPs court, even if there was any infight in it, it was BJPs headache. Why is Mr.Kumaraswamy trying to fool the people with all these silly statements?

Mr.Kumaraswamy today also says that BJP members from Bellary accused him of corruption, which is why he doesnt want to transfer the power. Well, BJP members from Bellary had leveled corruption charges against Mr.Kumaraswamy 13 months back. Why did he not resign then itself? Why did he wait till his entire term of enjoying the power ended?

I am not a pro-BJP or a anti-JDS person. I am pro any person or party that promises to perform well and performs as per the promises made. Given the fact that BJP has not been in power in the state even once, and the other two parties JD(S) and Congress have done nothing great to the state in the past 50 years, I think BJP deserves to be given at least one chance in the state.

More than that it is the ethics, morality, political credentials, trustworthiness of JD(S) that is in question today. JD(S) has lost the trust of the people. JD(S) has clearly backstabbed BJP after royally enjoying power for over 20 months. Even today after deciding that they wont support BJP and well knowing the fact that JD(S) cannot be in power either without BJP’s support, Mr.Kumaraswamy has still not resigned from his post!! All BJP ministers have resigned last week itself. BJP has also today withdrawn support officially by giving a letter to the governor. But JD(S) continues to stick to the power seat, and has not yet resigned! This itself shows who is really power hungry!

The irony of this state assembly is that both the parties which ranked second (Congress) and third (JDS) in terms of MLA seats enjoyed power by their members becoming chief ministers i.e Dharam Singh from Congress and Kumaraswamy from JDS. Where as BJP, the party which got the most number of MLA seats and was the largest party in the current assembly was kept out of chief ministership and power!! What is the meaning of people’s votes then?

Today the public opinion in Karnataka is that of a hope that has been crushed. Mr.Kumaraswamy who was thought to be a fresh, promising politician when he debuted 20 months ago, has proved the people wrong by turning out to be otherwise by breaking the biggest promise he had made, that too in the name of the people of the state.

Mr.Kumaraswamy today has become just another politician who talks something and does something else. Let us see how the people of the state will respond in the coming elections which has been imposed on them because of the JD(S) greed. Can Mr.Kumaraswamy explain to the people as to how these untimely elections (more than a year and a half earlier than the supposed date) are in the interests of the people? While the fact is that it is a mere waste of the tax payer’s money and public time.

At least this time let us not create another hung assembly giving scope for cheap politics, let us all vote for one single party BJP to power and give it a chance. We have seen enough of this JD(S) and Congress power politics.
